2020 loben das Netzwerk Women in International Security Deutschland (WIIS.de) und die Zeitschrift Internationale Politik (IP) zum zweiten Mal den Sylke Tempel-Essaypreis aus. Er erinnert an die Journalistin, Publizistin und Mentorin Sylke Tempel (1963 – 2017), Vorsitzende von WIIS.de und Chefredakteurin der IP, Deutschlands führender Zeitschrift für Außenpolitik. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich an Frauen unter 35 Jahren. Der Text der Gewinnerin wird mit einem Preisgeld von 1.500,- Euro prämiert und in der Ausgabe 6/2020 der IP veröffentlicht.

Themenstellung: I have a dream – ein neues transatlantisches Manifest
Seit der Wahl Donald Trumps zum US-Präsidenten geht ein Riss durch die transatlantischen Beziehungen. Das Bündnis wird in Frage gestellt – immer öfter, und immer grundsätzlicher. Schon vor Trump hielten Kritiker die transatlantischen Beziehungen für antiquiert, in einer Welt mit neuen Machtzentren und dynamischen Entwicklungen außerhalb des Westens. Bei einer Wiederwahl Trumps, so die Sorge, könnte der Schaden noch größer werden oder das Bündnis gar zerbrechen. Wie kann man die Beziehungen zu den USA auf neue, starke und von den handelnden Personen unabhängige Füße stellen? Wie kann ein transatlantisches Verhältnis wieder attraktiv und jung werden, zukunftsorientiert und -fähig? Wozu wird dieses Bündnis überhaupt noch gebraucht? Ist als transatlantischer Partner der Zukunft auch z.B. eine asiatische Macht denkbar? Was nutzt ein transatlantisches Verhältnis Bürgerinnen und Bürgern?

Women in International Security-Germany (WIIS.de) and the magazine Internationale Politik (IP) are pleased to announce the second annual Sylke Tempel Essay Prize. The prize commemorates the author and mentor Sylke Tempel (1963 – 2017), who was president of WIIS.de and editor-in-chief of IP, Germany’s leading foreign policy magazine. The prize is directed at women under 35 years of age interested in thinking and writing about politics; essays can be submitted in English or German.
The winning essay will be awarded 1.500 € and be published by Internationale Politik.
The theme for 2020: I have a dream – A New Transatlantic Manifesto
Since the election of Donald Trump a deep fissure has appeared in the transatlantic relationship. The alliance is being questioned more frequently, and more fundamentally. Even before Trump emerged on the scene critics accused the transatlantic alliance of being antiquated and out of touch in a world with new centers of power and dynamism outside the West. If Trump is reelected many fear that the alliance may be broken beyond repair.
How can relations with the United States be reestablished on new, firmer footing that cannot be undermined by an individual leader? How can transatlantic relations be revived, made forward-looking, and sound for the future? What do we still need the alliance for, how does it help citizens? And might an Asian partner be part of a renewed alliance?
These are possible questions to explore in addressing the topic, but each essay should find its own persuasive and coherent approach to a new transatlantic manifesto. The essay form requires original reasoning and exploration, written in a form that is both adroit and accessible to a broad public.
